This recipe for Copycat McDonald’s Egg McMuffin & Hash Brown Breakfast might be even tastier than the real thing… and it’s made with better-for-you ingredients. Keep scrolling for the recipe.
When I was in grade school and even into my early high school years, my dad would drive me to school on his way to work a few times a week. And at least one of those days each week, we made sure to leave a bit earlier so we could make our way through the McDonald’s drive through for breakfast. Let’s just say I never missed taking the bus to school on those days 😉
Without fail, dad and I would split a classic Egg McMuffin with a side of hash brown. Looking back (and at my appetite now that I’ve evolved into the adult Hungry Blonde), I realize how those few bites probably weren’t much of a breakfast for him, especially since I usually left barely any hash brown for him. Sorry dad!
These days I still have quite an affinity for my favorite fast food breakfast, both because of how delicious it is, but also because that seemingly mundane morning ritual I got to share with my dad was actually such a meaningful way to begin so many of childhood days.
Once I did get my driver’s license, I’ve probably had that nostalgic breakfast less than 5 times in the last nearly 20 (gasp!) years.
…until now.
The classic egg McMuffin + hash brown combo is so easy to make at home and it tastes shockingly like the real thing. But now, you can control the quality of your ingredients for a bit more of a healthy(ish) fast food inspired breakfast.

This recipe for Copycat McDonald’s Egg McMuffin & Hash Brown Breakfast might be even tastier than the real thing… and it’s made with better-for-you ingredients.
- Prep Time: 5
- Cook Time: 15
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 4 1x
- Category: Breakfast
- Method: Stovetop, Toast, Air Fry
- Cuisine: American
- Diet: Vegetarian
Ingredients
- 4 frozen hash brown patties
- 4 English muffins
- 4 eggs
- 4 slices Canadian bacon
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Start by cooking the hash brown patties. You can follow instructions on package, but I love to air fry them as it’s faster and gets a great crunch. Air fry at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes, flipping midway
- Heat a large nonstick pan to medium heat and grease with nonstick spray. Break eggs into 4 greased egg rings* and cook for 4-5 minutes. Gently remove the molds and flip to allow other side to cook for 2-3 minutes
- Cook Canadian bacon in same pan for just about 1 minutes per side
- Toast English muffins, then spread a thin layer of butter on each side until it melts
- Assemble the sandwiches by adding slice of cheese**, Canadian bacon and egg. Serve with hash brown
Notes
* I used these egg rings I found on Amazon, but you can also simply fry the egg over medium/hard
** To get the cheese to melt more, place it on top of the eggs when they’re finished cooking

Some notes on Copycat McDonald’s Egg McMuffin & Hash Brown Breakfast:
So, this recipe is made with simple ingredients. Generally, they should all be pretty easy to find. But here are some of my favorites that are better-for-you options!
- Hash browns: If you’re looking for some seriously crunchy and delicious hash browns, then I recommend the Trader Joe’s brand. However, if you can’t find those or aren’t near a TJ’s, don’t worry! You can find hash browns at most grocery stores in the frozen potatoes section. I recommend making them the air fryer, because it gives great crispiness. This is the air fryer I swear by.
- English Muffins: My favorite brand is Bay’s for that classic Egg McMuffin texture. I also love Food For Life Sprouted Whole Grain English Muffins for a healthier (higher in fiber + protein!) option. You can use your favorite whole grain or gluten-free English muffin, too.
- Canadian Bacon: What makes Canadian bacon different from regular bacon? Well, it’s simply a bit thicker (more like ham). I like Jone’s Canadian bacon: 3 slices packs in 10g protein for only 60 calories!
- Cheese: opt for organic cheese if possible and avoid antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides or GMO anything.
- Eggs: So, you can always simply fry the eggs. However, using the egg ring really lends to the classic Egg McMuffin. Plus, it’s very simple to use! I recommend opting for pasture-raised organic eggs. Vital Farms eggs are my go-to.
