The minute the calendar switches over to September, I start to embrace all things fall. Honestly, one of the best things about this season are the warming recipes you can make. Plus, you get to use all the fresh produce! Now, for my fall junkies out there, I think there’s an unspoken understanding that September is for apple recipes, and October is for pumpkin recipes. So, we’re embracing September by cooking up all things apple-flavored, starting with my Apple Butter Bread.
This recipe embraces all the flavors of fall in one delicious, spiced loaf. It is SO soft and fluffy! Plus there’s absolutely no chopping apples! All you need is apple butter, which lends to a super moist bread.
Did I mention this is the SOFTEST dessert bread?! It’s not too sweet, and would make for a delicious breakfast with a smear of butter alongside your morning coffee.
If you love whipping up a cozy loaf in the fall (and who doesn’t?!), then be sure to check out the sister to this recipe, my Classic Pumpkin Bread. Basically, make this one when it hits October 1st. Or better yet, make them both all season long!

Ingredients and Substitutions for Apple Butter Bread
Where you can find apple butter?
The brand I used is The Dutch Kettle and it worked perfectly in this recipe. Now, most grocery stores carry apple butter, or you can find a local brand from a local farm. It’s also available on Amazon.
You can omit the glaze, but I like adding an easy glaze made with just powdered sugar and milk (like on my viral Sugar Cookie Bread!).
Can I use any other (gluten-free) flours in this Apple Butter Bread?
Yes! In fact, there are many alternative options. Here are some:
- Your favorite 1:1 gluten-free flour (mine are Bob’s Red Mill, Pillsbury and King Arthur)
- oat flour
- whole wheat flour
I would not recommend using coconut flour as it has a very different absorption rate than other flours. Almond flour may work, but I have not tried it. In this case, it may not “hold up” as well as the other flours.
Can I make this recipe vegan?
Yes! If you want to make this recipe vegan, then instead of the regular eggs make 2 flax eggs.
Other ingredients notes/substitutions:
- Instead of granulated sugar you can use brown sugar or coconut sugar
- Instead of coconut oil you can use a vegetable oil or butter
- Any chopped nuts would be delicious mixed into the batter, or added on top before baking.
- Other mix-in options: chopped pecans, chopped walnuts, diced apple.
