Oh, it’s been a while since my last Food Freedom article! If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, you can catch up on the rest of the posts by clicking here.
This is going to be a bit of a shorter post, but it’s one that I’m really excited about. It’s a principle that I’ve been practicing for a long time but didn’t fully realize it until my best friend Sydney and I had a conversation about it the other day. It’s also a principle that doesn’t just apply to food/fitness – it’s one that can cover all sorts of situations in life.
Normally for these posts I have a broken down list of tips/advice, but as I was thinking about how to break this one down, it really only came down to ONE thing, and it’s this:
What you allow is what will continue.
Another way I like to put it: make it a point to actively break bondage BEFORE it starts.
And as I’m texting Syd while writing this post, she added how it’s “resisting the small things so it’s easier to resist the big things.”
Here are some examples of what I’m talking about, both in regards to Food Freedom and just life in general.
- This will be the LAST time I fast after a day of overeating
- I know sleep is more important, but I’ll feel better if I wake up early and burn 300 calories
- What I’m really craving is pizza, but I’ll feel more in control if I eat a salad instead
- I just need to put one more purchase on my credit card, and then I swear that’s it
- I know I’ve lowered my standards for this guy, but if I just ___ one last time he’ll realize how much he likes me
- I know my boss is asking too much of me, but I’ll just work on a Saturday this one last time
And those my friends, are the “small things” that get you caught in unhealthy cycles that become more and more difficult to break out of as time goes on.
In situations like those, here’s my challenge for you: Do the opposite. THESE are your opportunities to make steps toward Food (and LIFE) Freedom.
Here’s the thing. Food Freedom isn’t sexy. It doesn’t promise you the quick-fix, metabolism-boosting transformative power that the latest fad diet promises. It certainly will transform your life for the better, but it’s not going to happen overnight, and it’s not going to be easy. True and LASTING Food Freedom isn’t going to just fall into your lap. You have to work hard for it in the beginning, and never stop working to maintain it longterm.
I’m feeling like this was a bit of a “tough love” post, but I know some of you need to hear it, and I might be the only person who is going to say it. So on that note, I’ll wrap with some encouragement (ha).
I don’t know where you are in your Food Freedom journey, but I can say that I’ve been there, and I can promise you that TODAY you’re going to have an opportunity to take a step toward Food Freedom. It may be small and it may seem insignificant, but trust me – it’s not. Keep making those decisions – one, after the other, after the other – and one day you’re going to be walking in more freedom than you ever imagined.
xoxo GG
