As a food blogger, imagine my surprise when microblading was one of the top requested blog posts I’ve gotten lately! It makes sense, though, as it’s a bit of a newer beauty treatment that has peaked the interest of so many women. I mean, I think we can all agree that filling in our brows on a daily basis is a total pain. So a few weeks ago I finally took the plunge and am now back to share my experience with microblading.
If you’re not familiar with microblading, it’s a semi-permanent tattoo technique used to create the illusion of fuller brows. I had gone back and forth about getting it done for months. I’ve always had incredibly light eyebrows with sparseness in different areas. I could never get them to naturally look as full as I’d like, and I just got so sick of having to constantly fill them in.
Finding the best place to get microblading done was incredibly important to me. After some research and asking for recommendations, I decided to go to EverTrue Microblading Salon in NYC for a (free) consultation.
the consultation
At my consultation I met with my brow specialist Cathy and explained to her exactly what I wanted. I made sure to bring photo examples too, to better show the shape and shade I was going for (as a blonde, I really wanted to make sure my brows had more of a brown hue, rather than reddish).
She walked me through what the entire process would be, and then she filled my brows with a pencil to show give me an idea of what to expect my microbladed brows to look like.
The consultation really helped answer all of my questions and concerns about microblading, so I decided to book an appointment to go through with it.
at the microblading appointment
A few weeks later, it was go time. I purposefully planned it on a day that I didn’t care if my brows were a little dark for the following week (more on that later).
My microblading appointment in total was just over an hour. First Cathy went over my brows again with a pencil and confirmed that I liked the shape. Then we chose the color/shade of the dye. Next she put a numbing cream on my brows for 20 minutes. While my brows were numbing Cathy went through the full aftercare details.
The microblading itself was about 15 minutes per brow, which is much shorter than I anticipated. And that was it! I scheduled my “perfecting appointment” (for any touch-ups) before I left, which is included in the cost at EverTrue.
did it hurt?
I didn’t feel an ounce of pain. I felt more of a “scraping” sensation, which was a little uncomfortable when I thought about what it was, but there was zero painful sensation. Once I stopped thinking about it I was fine.
what’s the aftercare?
The aftercare is probably the most difficult part of the process. For 24 hours there should be no exposure to water. Then for about a week after it’s best to avoid getting your brows wet (including sweat) so I was super careful in the shower and didn’t do intense exercise. Starting 2 days after I was to apply a healing ointment to my brows twice a day and do so for a week.
One of my biggest concerns was I knew that my brows would get darker for the first few days after microblading, but it wasn’t nearly as bad/intense as I thought it would be (I didn’t feel embarrassed being seen, or anything). Days 2-5 were probably the darkest. I also had some itching during the first week, but you can’t scratch them, so I found that actually just tapping on my brows helped the itching go away.
Around days 8-11 is when I would say my brows began to scab and peel. This is probably when I disliked the look most, because they were kind of blotchy, but it’s normal and you can NOT peel or pick at them. That can ruin the microblading results. By day 12 or so the peeling stopped and I could tell my brows were reaching the final look.
(That was all in my own words, so go ahead and check out the full after-care details + what to expect straight from EverTrue)
how much does it cost?
At EverTrue Salon in NYC microblading costs $550-$1200, depending on the specialist you go to. I went to Cathy and think she was absolutely amazing – would definitely recommend her.
how long does it last?
Up to 18 months, depending on various factors (care, genetics, etc.).
final thoughts
I truly couldn’t be happier with my microblading results! I only wish I got it done sooner. I was kindly gifted the service in exchange for social media coverage, however I’d pay full price now that I know how great it looks and easier it has made my life.
