When it comes to embracing a healthy lifestyle, meal prepping is a popular method of being prepared and staying on track. I love following some of my favorite bloggers who practice meal prepping and seeing how they make healthy eating throughout the week look so simple.
…BUT. If I’m being completely honest – meal prepping has been something I’ve dabbled in and out of. As much as I loved the idea of it, I always found myself overcomplicating it or making boring meals that I didn’t enjoy all that much. But with the new year upon us and a very busy few weeks in front of me, I figured it was time to give the whole meal prepping thing another go. This time I followed a few simple tricks that made meal prepping way easier (and delicious).
My Top Tips For Meal Prepping
1.Keep it balanced
For each meal I created, I made sure it included at least one serving of vegetable, protein, healthy fats and some sort of grain or legume. I loved this aspect of meal prepping because when I make meals on the fly they don’t tend to include all of those things, but with the thought put into it ahead of time I was able to make sure my meals were more balanced and (bonus) more filling.
2. Invest in the right containers
This one was HUGE, and I didn’t realize how much of a big deal it actually was. In the past when I attempted meal prepping I used containers that didn’t have separators, and let’s just say it wasn’t ideal for keeping my meals looking and tasting their best after a few days. I recently discovered Rubbermaid® TakeAlongs® Meal Prep Containers, and they are such a game-changer. They feature a built-in divider to keep food separated, allowing complete meals to be stored in individual containers, plus they have a clear lid which makes it easy to identify your meals. They’re also microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe & BPA free.
3. Have a list of new recipes you want to try
Just because you’re preparing meals ahead of time, it doesn’t mean they have to be boring! I love keeping track of new recipes I want to try on Pinterest and by saving them on Instagram. It’s easy to refer back to them when I make my grocery list for the week ahead.
4. Don’t skimp on flavor
On that same note, I think meal prep can tend to get a bad rep of being boring, tasteless food. Umm no thanks. Eating healthy can and should still taste delicious, so I make sure to add lots of spices and herbs to my meals to make them as flavorful and tasty as possible.
5. Make pretty meals
The saying “you eat with your eyes first” is so very true. Choose foods (especially vegetables) that are full of different colors and textures that will make your prepared meals much more appealing while you eat them, and of course it doesn’t hurt when they happen to be Insta-worthy 😉
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually think I’m going to make it a point to continue meal prepping as much as I can! If you’re in the same boat, head on over to Walmart to grab Rubbermaid® TakeAlongs® Meal Prep Containers at a rollback price, ending on 2/10.
