Today I had a very difficult job. I was forced to taste test 7 flavors of ice cream for this Enlightened Ice Cream Review. You should probably feel sorry for me.
Thankfully I was able to push through the task at hand and bring you a review of each and every flavor of Enlightened (high protein, high fiber, low sugar) ice cream.
“Healthy” ice cream seems to be all the rage these days, and I’ve definitely tried just about every variety out there. Some are great, others not so much. But I can safely say that Enlightened is officially my favorite and new go-to brand (and no – they aren’t paying me to say that).
The calorie count is slightly higher than with some of the other brands (80-100 calories per serving…or as I like to measure it, 240-400 calories per pint), but the flavor and consistency is on a completely different level. I’m talking REAL ice cream status here.
Not to ruin the surprise, but I actually enjoyed each and every flavor. You can’t really go wrong here. But for the sake of detail, let’s chat about each flavor for a sec.
**********
Frozen Hot Cocoa: I’m not the world’s biggest chocolate fan, so I wasn’t expecting to love this flavor as much as I did. I figured it would just taste like regular chocolate ice cream, but it actually tastes like hot cocoa! Complete with little chocolate chips and a swirl of marshmallow. This was one of my top 3.
Caramel Oatmeal Cookie Crunch: This was one of the more unique flavors. I actually thought this would be my favorite, and it was good, but not a top contender. It was the only flavor that I noticed a slight aftertaste.
Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip: I mean, you can’t go wrong with this combo. This one will definitely be a favorite if you’re a peanut butter lover like myself.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough: I’d have to say this was my #1 favorite. It’s super creamy and has nice big chunks of cookie dough. Tasted the most like real ice cream!
Sea Salt Caramel: one of the lower calorie options, but doesn’t skimp of flavor. Loved it.
Triple Chocolate: This one is definitely for the chocolate lovers. It’s super rich and decadent, and surprisingly has a distinctly different taste than the Frozen Hot Cocoa flavor.
Mint Chocolate Chip: This was one I was especially surprised by because I notoriously never like mint chocolate chip ice cream. But dare I say, this was one of my top 3? It was one of the creamiest varieties and the mint flavor is perfectly subtle and refreshing.
There you have it! Oh – be sure to let the ice cream sit out for at least 5 minutes (I’d say closer to 10) because it softens and gets super creamy that way.
