Something I tend to be kind of hard on myself about is, I love having slow & intentional mornings, but I often find myself jumping into work-mode way too quickly. The culprit: my phone.
It sits on my nightstand while I sleep because it’s also my alarm clock, but that would make it all too easy to grab for right when I wake up in the morning. Seeing any sort of notification would throw me into work mode, and without even thinking I’d be opening emails, checking my text messages, and *gasp* opening Instagram.
I’ve tried to have grace on myself and know that I can still pop right back into an intentional morning, but just seeing those notifications would rob my mind of the calmness it could and should have in the early hours of the day. Spending time praying and relaxing while I drink my coffee is an important ritual to me, and it also really sets my entire day up for success.
So what I started to do that has made all the difference is I put my phone on airplane more BEFORE I go to bed. Airplane mode has gotten lots of buzz recently, but the key here is making sure it’s on overnight so none of those notifications can even come through. Important: make sure your wifi is turned off too, otherwise many notifications will still appear!
Even though my natural tendency is still to check my phone in the morning, I’m instantly reminded that making the effort to turn off airplane mode will completely shift my morning, and I’m able to motivate myself to wait until I’ve had my quiet time. It’s been such a simple little thing that has made such a huge impact. I couldn’t recommend it more!
Whatever your preferred morning routine is – praying, reading, exercising, setting intentions – removing the distraction that is your phone can help you be so much more mindful and present before going into the day.
Just a little tip/inspiration for you on this Wednesday. Hope you’re all having a lovely week so far, xoxo GG
