This decadent Chocolate Strawberry Dump Cake is the latest and greatest in my healthier dump cake series. It is inspired by Valentine’s Day around the corner, but instead of the mess that can be chocolate covered strawberries, we’re just tossing everything in a cake pan for an even more impressive dessert 😉 Plus, you’ll never believe this dump cake is actually made with better-for-you ingredients!
If you’re not familiar with Dump Cakes, then allow me to let you in on the *easiest* semi-homemade dessert that tastes like you slaved away in the kitchen all day long making it! Dump cakes usually include just a few ingredients: a fruit filling layer, cake mix layer, and butter layer. That’s it!
In case you missed it, I have a handful of other delicious healthier dump cakes!
What makes my dump cake series different? Well, I use FRESH fruit (instead of canned) to cut out any funky added ingredients. Plus, that makes the flavor of this Chocolate Strawberry Dump Cake even more delicious!
I also use a grain-free + gluten-free cake mix (made with simpler, clean ingredients) to make this Chocolate Strawberry Dump Cake a healthier option than most.
And the best part, this dump cake is made with less than 10 ingredients and ready in under and hour.

The Difference of Using Fresh Strawberries
So, most dump cakes use canned fruit filling, but let me tell you – using fresh fruit makes ALL the difference! Plus, it’s really quite simple to make your own filling. The secret is adding a bit of sugar and water to the fruit, which helps it develop a natural syrup. It’s that natural syrup that gives this cake that punch of sweet, fresh flavor.
Can I use canned fruit filling instead of fresh? Yes, but in that case omit the water and sugar and only add in the filling.
Ingredients and Substitutions for Chocolate Strawberry Dump Cake
An essential part of every dump cake is the cake mix. In this case, I used Simple Mills chocolate cake mix, but can use any you like. Another option I love is Betty Crocker’s Gluten-Free Devil’s Food Cake Mix. Feeling really fancy? You can make your own chocolate cake batter and use that here, too!
Chocolate chips: For this recipe I used Hu no added sugar chocolate chips. They are a delicious low sugar chocolate made with clean ingredients. Use code GRACIE for 15% off. Some other favorite low sugar chocolates I love are Lily’s and Bake Believe.
To make vegan: If you want to make this vegan, then opt for vegan butter and a dairy-free whipped topping.
To serve: Now, I recommend serving this cake with a dollop of whipped cream. But, it’s best with whipped cream AND a scoop of vanilla ice cream (;
