I often get asked how I come up with inspiration for the Hungry Blonde recipes. While there are a variety of ways – everything from reader suggestions to trends, to seasonal dishes – my best inspiration comes from taking existing favorite recipes or treats and giving them my own Hungry Blonde healthy(ish) spin.
So the other day when I was thinking about how much I love the classic treat that is Rice Krispies Treats, I knew I had to try giving it that HB flair 😉
This recipe takes just 10 minutes to prepare and has only 4 ingredients needed! Honestly, it doesn’t get much simpler than this one… or more delicious. I love adding in sprinkles for an extra bit of fun. In addition, this is a great recipe to make with kids.

Ingredients and Substitutions for Birthday Cake Protein Rice Krispies Treats
What protein powder should I use?
For this recipe I used PE Science Cake Pop protein powder. It has been my favorite protein powder for years and works so well to add that delicious birthday cake flavor! You can use code GRACIE for a discount.
I have not tried this recipe with any other protein powders, but a whey-based protein powder would probably work best in terms of texture and flavor (compared to a plant-based one).
What marshmallows should I use?
I used regular mini marshmallows. You could try using these vegan marshmallows, however I have not tried them and cannot vouch for how well they’d work in this recipe.
What cereal should I use?
I like using good old fashioned Rice Krispies, but for an even healthier option you could opt for these organic sprouted brown rice crisps.
Is there a substitution for butter?
Instead of regular butter you could use a dairy-free/vegan butter. Also, refined coconut oil should work just fine in this recipe in place of butter.
